Paper Tips and Tricks of the Trade can help keep your copier, laser printer or other office equipment that uses paper running smoothly.

   Paper Storage

  1. Always store paper flat. Never lay it on its side as this can cause curling.
  2. Never store paper in damp or moist areas.
  3. Keep paper in its wrapper. It is designed to prevent absorption of moisture from the air. Also, store wrapped paper in its carton.
  4. Store paper away from direct sunlight and heat vents, as this will cause the paper to dry out or fade.
  5. Before using, paper should be acclimated to the environment it is to be used in. Make sure your paper has been in the same room as the machine for at least 24 hours.

   Paper Usage

  1. Paper has a top and bottom surface. The label on the wrapper should designate the topside as "copy or print this side first" If there is no label; the side where the seam of the wrapper overlaps is the bottom. Make sure your machine images the topside first. This will reduce or eliminate curling, which can cause paper jams.
  2. If the paper is left in the feed tray for any length of time this can cause static because of paper "dry out". If the paper is jamming, try turning it over in the feed tray. This will make the bottom side the first image side, which still contains some moisture. This should eliminate the static problem.
  3. Never mix different types of paper in the paper tray. The slight difference in the paper makeup may cause the machine to jam when going from one type of paper to the other. Always remove one type of paper before loading another type.
  4. Check your machines paper specifications, as some equipment is not designed to use paper heavier than 20 or 24 lb.
